“So, it all looks good? We can start excavating and doing the foundation next week.” I nodded happily, excitement popping in my chest like sparklers as I stood up to shake Sergeant’s father’s hand, and he smiled warmly. “Great. I’ll call you on Tuesday to do some signing before we break ground.”

“Awesome. Thanks so much- I appreciate you jumping through some hoops for me.” He downright grinned at me, and I shuffled out from my chair as he rounded his desk to show us to the door. “I expected the time frame to be a little crunchy- um, but are you sure it’s not an issue?”

“Of course not, Caitlyn. The worst part about expecting is when things go right, right?” He chuckled as he opened the door for me, and I smiled with a little nod. “I remember building my first house after leaving law. It was nerve-wracking. I suspect it’s the same for same for you.”

“Yeah- I did my research, but… it’s different actually going through it.” Flames licked up my neck at my own admission, and I stuck out my hand for another shake as nerves gnawed at my gut. “Thank you, sir.”

“You’re very welcome. I wish I could get you a better deal, but my boss doesn’t exactly believe in discounts.” I didn’t know what to say to that, so I only nodded, and Warren and I headed for the door of the small shop. Nibbling my bottom lip furiously, I rubbed my arms as goosebumps blanketed my skin, and Warren slipped his palm under the back of my shirt. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up, and I rested my head on his shoulder as the bright sun blazed down on us.

“That went really nice- I love that they had a 3D rendering of the place so I could see what it would eventually look like.” The rendering, at least, was exactly what I wanted, and Warren hummed in agreement as we headed to the small parking lot adjacent to the warehouse-slash-retail space. “I’m super confident that this’ll work out.”

“Yeah- I just can’t figure out one part of all this…” Trailing off, Warren glanced over at me, and a sharp stab of apprehension struck my chest. “What’s the real reason you’re going so far with this, Caitlyn. I thought we agreed- no more games. Your roomies- that part was true, but I know for a fact that it’s not the real driving force behind this. I still haven’t figured out why you just decided to give me a shot, either.”

“It’s not a game, Warren. I’m trying to get my life together.” Pulling my keys out of my pocket, I frowned deeply as a twinge twisted my heart at his unconvinced, bland glance. “What?”

“Obviously, you’re getting your life together. My question is- why?” My eyelid twitched in agitation, and I remotely unlocked my car even though the top was down. Before I could break away, Warren paused to grip my biceps, and he cast a hard glare that only thickened the lump forming in my throat.
